Discovery of a bright radio transient in M 82 : a new radio supernova ?

چکیده
In this Letter, we report the discovery of a new bright radio transient in M82. Using the Very Large Array, we observed the nuclear region of M82 at several epochs at 22 GHz and detected a new bright radio source in this galaxy's central region. We find a flux density for this flaring source that is ∼ 300 times larger than the upper limits determined in previous observations. The flare must have started between 2007 October 29 and 2008 March 24. Over the past year, the flux density of this new source has decreased from ∼100 mJy to ∼11 mJy. The lightcurve (based on only three data points) can be fitted better with an exponential decay than with a power law. Based on the current data we cannot identify the nature of this transient source. However, a new radio supernova seems to be the most natural explanation. With its flux density of more than 100 mJy, it is at least 1.5 times brighter than SN1993J in M81 at the peak of its lightcurve at 22 GHz.

Jet Triggered Type Ia Supernovae in Radio-galaxies?
We report the serendipitous discovery of a supernova (SN) in the nearby radio-galaxy 3C 78. Observations obtained with the STIS spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope show, at a distance of 0.54 arcsec (300 pc) from the galaxy nucleus, a second bright source, not present in previous images. As this source was fortuitously covered by the spectrograph slit its spectrum was obtained and ...
متن کاملPSR B 1706 − 44 and the SNR G 343 . 1 − 2 . 3 as the remnants of a cavity supernova explosion
The possible association of the supernova remnant (SNR) G 343.1−2.3 with the pulsar PSR B 1706−44 (superposed on the arclike " shell " of the SNR) has been questioned by some authors on the basis of an inconsistency between the implied and measured (scintillation) transverse velocities of the pulsar, the absence of any apparent interaction between the pulsar and the SNR's " shell " , and some o...
متن کاملMulti-band study of NGC7424 and its two newly-discovered ULXs
We have studied the face-on, barred spiral NGC7424 (site of the rare Type IIb SN2001ig) with Chandra, Gemini and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. After giving revised X-ray colours and luminosity of the supernova, here we focus on some other interesting sources in the galaxy: in particular, our serendipitous discovery of two ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). The brighter one (∼ 10 erg s...

We have obtained a second epoch observation of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant (SNR) with the Chandra X-ray Observatory to measure detailed X-ray proper motions for the first time. Both epoch observations are 50 ks exposures of the ACIS-S3 chip and they are separated by 2 years. Measurements of the thin Xray continuum dominated filaments located around the edge of the remnant (that are ident...
متن کاملEG J 1809 − 2328 Mallory
We report the discovery of a partial ∼ 2 diameter non-thermal radio shell coincident with Taz, the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) in the error box of the apparently variable γ-ray source 3EG J1809−2328. We propose that this radio shell is a newly identified supernova remnant (SNR G7.5−1.7) associated with the PWN. The SNR surrounds an amorphous region of thermal X-rays detected in archival ROSAT and ...
